Workplace Ideas for Freelancers and Start-ups

Start-ups and freelancers often have limited budgets to spend on office spaces. Most of the time there is a shortage of commercial properties that suit their pocket. Here are simple ways in which they can maximize the limited space available to them without going over-the-top on decor or expenditure.

Keep it Simple & Uncluttered:

A great decor idea is to keep cupboards and storage spaces fixed at a height; this way desks aligned with walls can give you more room to move about in the center of the room.

To give your room an illusion of height or width, opt for wall colors like whites, creams and pastel shades as these are brighter and bring out the light in your surroundings.

Avoid heavy artifacts or dramatic showpieces as these can look inappropriate - less is more for a corporate set-up and it’s better that your space looks simple than gaudy. Large computer tables and cabinets take up more room, so try opting for folding desks and chairs which can be kept aside when not needed.

Go Digital:

Try and opt for a paperless environment by putting everything on email or saved on a hard-drive. This acts as a back-up and keeps everything stored safely for later reference and lesser files to maintain for physical records. Cloud computing helps you share data with clients and colleagues from a distance - a great option for freelancers as they work from home. Instead of personal diaries for brainstorming try putting up one large whiteboard with markers where employees can share ideas on one common platform.

Re-invent and Rent: Keep a coffee machine and some eating staples in a corner so in case you have a small utility room, it can be used as additional cabin or work desk. A lot of freelancers have come up with DIY Work Closets where they reinvent wardrobes and cupboards as their private office. Multiple shelves keep stationery tidy while the doors of the closet maintain discretion and can be closed after work as you get back to home life. Booking a meeting room for discussions, closing a deal or signing contracts with a potential client is another great option. Meeting room prices depend on the number of hours or days. So, set your agenda in advance and make the most of the space you’re renting.
